Thailand Railways has offered online booking facilities since February 2009. Initially this was a fairly limited service in that there were only a few trains that you could reserve tickets on. However over time this has improved and booking on-line is possible for all Rapid, Express and Special Express services operating out of Bangkok on the North, North Eastern and Southern lines. The Eastern route towards Cambodia is not included in the system.
All classes of travel are now available to book on line so this includes sleeping berths as well. You can book seats/berths for up to four passengers using this system..
Thai Railways on-line booking is provided by a secure web site, Thai Railway Ticket. Although you can search the system, if you want to purchase tickets you must register on the site before you are allowed to reserve and pay for them. Payments can be made by credit card from 60 days before departure up to 3 days before departure. For bookings made 3 days or less other methods must be used e.g. visit station or use email. Thai Railway Ticket has both Thai and English language versions and is relatively easy to navigate. Tickets can be printed off when the booking is complete.
Please note that you will probably be asked for your passport(identification) when using such tickets on the train.
Unfortunately anyone wishing to travel from Bangkok to either Malaysia and Singapore on the “International Train” cannot use the system for the whole journey so booking at a railway station or by email is the best option for this route. Timetables for all State Railway of Thailand trains can be found here. Note that you need to click on the appropriate tab for the route you need, e.g. Southern, to show the available trains.
Travel by train in Thailand remains a relatively safe, relaxed and cheap way to see the country. Thailand Railways online booking system is a boon, especially for overseas visitors, since seats on popular routes can be booked from outside the country, well in advance, thus avoiding disappoint.
