Monkey Police Thailand

Monkey Police in Thailand?  Well it seems that a certain Short Tailed(Pig Tailed) Macaque monkey named Santisuk,  located in the troubled area of Southern Thailand, was recruited by the Royal Thai Police as a sort of mascot when one of the officers found him injured and nursed him back to health.

The officer even made the monkey a police uniform and used to take him on patrol as you can see from the attached video(sorry about soundtrack/music). I have replaced the noisy video with one from the Telegraph. If you want to watch the original You Tube video you can view it here.

You may have noticed that I am using the past tense in this blog because sadly Santisuk is no longer alive having  recently been killed by soi dogs while his handler was away from the police vehicle. The Bangkok Post carries this report on his demise, Monkey Cop Dies After Dog Attack.

Malcolm I saw the news pictures around the pick-up where they wrapped the monkey up. Didn’t know they had a new one.

Mike your story is a sad one but one which surprises me. I wouldn’t have thought soi dogs would go anywhere near a monkey, especially as Santisuk was quite big. Maybe being chained up swung the odds. What a terrible way to go.

Thanks for the link and lets’s hope the new police monkey reaches retirement age.

Martyn I guess you are right the monkey was chained so he couldn’t escape. The pics of him in the uniform made me smile :-)

    Mike,

The uniform had me smile as well, a terrible way to go though.

Short Tailed(Pig Tailed) Macaque monkeys seem to be the blogging trend at the moment!
