Thailand in World Cup Voting Row

According to several UK based newspapers, Thailand is at the centre of a World Cup voting row. With the handbags flying around at Football Association(FA) headquarters in the UK following the failed England World Cup bids,  it seems that Thailand, a country hardly noted for its World Cup exploits, is  being accused of double dealing.

The story goes something like this,  apparently the FA agreed that in return for the vote of the Thai FIFA executive committee representative,  England would travel to Thailand next June to play a friendly in the Thai capital Bangkok.

“The Football Association agreed to the deal to help the bid, despite concerns over the wisdom of taking the England squad on a long-haul trip to Asia to play a game of no value to coach Fabio Capello. Telegraph Sport.

Well all that has now changed and in a move that the FA describe as an attempt “to form a coalition of the good guys”(in football) the Thailand trip has been cancelled. It seems the Thai FIFA representative actually supported Spain/Portugal and Qatar.

Ironically the Thai national team is managed by none other than Brian Robson, aka “Captain Marvel.” Who had a long and successful career as an England player and is the sixth highest capped player to represent his country.

Now given that current British Prime Minister David Cameron is due in the Kingdom over Christmas for a holiday as a guest of Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva(who is a keen Newcastle supporter), I wonder if  soccer will be on the menu over Christmas lunch.

Seems I missed the news whilst I was in BKK and the British PM  has already decided not to come to Thailand. A case of two yellows or a straight red perhaps?

Hi Lloyd, missed that one whilst I was away in BKK. thanks for the link. Pity because Pension Parity(Thailand) and the organisation in the UK had special plans to welcome DC.

Mike after the World Cup voting fiasco it seems the FA big wigs are flexing their muscles at the wrong people. Rather than tell President of FIFA executive Sepp Blatter what they really think of him they have picked on the Thai FA. That’s wrong.

English football gets big support in Thailand and this news won’t go down well with fanatical Thai soccer fans. I feel most sorry for Captain Marvel who must have been relishing the thought of taking on his beloved nation.

Martyn it will be interesting to see if any of the locals really care, can’t imagine Thailand without the premiership can you?

Wow. I always, always identified as English throughout the 25 years I was in South Africa but the first signs of that cracking were during the Michael Atherton ball-tampering episode. I am sure it is just the media but something about the national sports teams makes the English come across as extremely sore losers and it was at that time that I began to support South African sports teams and anyone who played against the English (specifically Australia or New Zealand). This post just cements that. I have never heard of such sour grapes as canceling sports fixtures or annual trips because of sport.

Emm got to agree with you although arranging them to buy the vote in the first place it not so good in my book either.

Mike I’m sure the Thais will be very disappointed at not having the chance to see their nation take on a big international side like England, but you are right, the Premier League will still make prime viewing and also line those illegal bookmakers pockets even more.
