If you are in Thailand at the New Year you may well hear Thais greet each other with “sawadee bpee mai” which is used in a similar way to “Happy New Year” in English, although it is not a direct translation since sawadee is a general greeting that can simply mean hello, even though bpee means year and one of the meanings of the Thai word mai is new.
Suk san bpee mai, where suk-san means happy, is actually a more accurate way of saying Happy New Year but this is more often than not heard at Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year from 13-15th April, when “suk san wan songkran,” or “happy Songkran day” in English, is a traditional greeting.
As it is traditional in the West to make New Years resolutions can I invite you all to share yours here by adding a comment, since it will be in print and more difficult to go back on.
Mine is to be in Bangkok on or about 7th February 2011……you can probably figure out why
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Thailand-Blogs.
