Thailand Trivia Photo Quiz-March 2011

A pencil sketch of the bridge on the river kwai

Bridge on the River Kwai

Thailand Trivia Photo Quiz

The Thailand Trivia Photo Quiz for March 2011 finds us near Kanchanaburi in the west of the country very close to the border with modern day Myanmar(Burma).

The bridge in the photograph was  built by allied prisoners of war and Asian forced labour and opened in 1942 as part of the infamous Death Railway. There are no prizes for guessing the name of the bridge, since I am sure most folk will recognise it as the structure often referred to as the “Bridge on the River Kwai,” despite the artistic licence I have taken in presenting it to you.

The name of the bridge however is a modern day Thai invention designed to satisfy the tourist market and inspired by the epic film of the same name. It is really quite misleading since it is not the correct name for the bridge, river or indeed its location.

Questions.

1. Where is the bridge actually located?

2. What is the meaning of the place name(translated from the Thai words)?

3. What was the real name of the river the bridge crosses when it was built in 1942?

Hint.

A couple of clues are perhaps in order although you can find all the answers in a post on one of my blogs.  But if you don’t fancy a search here’s a hint or two.

The river is quite shallow where the bridge crosses and in the past there was a ford which probably gives rise to its real name/location. Although I rarely see any of these animals in Thailand ;-)

The river enters the Gulf of Thailand in a pleasant town to the West of Bangkok that has an unusual railway terminal.

Look out for another Thailand Trivia photo quiz in April.

Kingar, I won’t give the answer yet but you might want to recheck….can’t say much more without giving it away, but two answers are totally right.

  • Kris

Mike I will go along with Kingar on 1 and 3 only because I don’t know any better. I don’t understand cryptic clues however for number 2 I would have a completely uneducated 1,000,000 to 1 shot at Chang, or elephant or some derivative there of.

Kris a good choice. The crytic clue is perhaps TOO cryptic, this might help.

What does a “ford” allow people/animals to do? Then add the animal which is not an elephant, but is often domesticated but rarely seen in Thailand.

    Hello Mike,
I thought I might have been right with the answers but apparently wrong with crossing the Water Buffalo River???

Kingar according to the stone plinth near the bridge the area were the bridge was built in 1941/42 was called Ban Tha Man Kham(its transliterated from Thai) which says means “horses crossing.”

Perhaps they meant the “iron horse.”

      Thanks for your participation ;-)

Emm, the photo had some tourists at the far end of the bridge. I was going to remove them in PSE but chose a different filter instead…..sort of WWII theme?
