If I was going to write a book about Thailand, its culture, customs and superstitions then I would like to think that the end product would be similar to, “Thai Ways,” by Denis Segaller. I have just finished reading this book on the recommendation of a reader of this blog and today’s post is by way of a review and recommendation for the authors work.
One of the things I most liked about the book was the authors writing style, which at the risk of sounding full of my own importance, is a little like my own style of getting my thoughts onto paper, well virtual paper in my case.
Reading between the lines I think Denis Segaller is the sort of man I would have liked as a grandfather, you know the sort, patient, caring and with a good tale or two to tell interlaced with a wicked sense of humour. Sadly I won’t be able to put that theory to the test because he passed away some years ago aged 91 having lived a very full life in the UK(were he originates from) and Thailand.
Looking at the Thai Culture in Thai Ways.
In the book, “Thai Ways,” Segaller takes a gentle look at the Thai culture and some of the things that make it somewhat unique and difficult to figure out to the average Westerner. This is not a book about the seedy side of Thailand, thank goodness, there are plenty of those around anyway. No this is a book that would make an ideal travelling companion for someone just arrived here or someone like myself who has lived in the country for a few years. Written from personal experience and supported by in depth research in Thailand during the authors life here, the book is lightweight and easy to read.
Personally, although I was already aware of many of the beliefs, customs, superstitions and legends discussed in the book, I now realise after reading the authors work, that in many cases I did not understand them fully. Now some of the places I have visited, things I have seen and behaviour I have witnessed certainly makes more sense.
So if you are mystified by the Thai Monarchy and social structure, find it hard to understand why Thais appear so superstitious or are always seeking good fortune or someone to tell their fortune then you will certainly enjoy the book. It might also help explain the behaviour of your Thai friends, how they got their name, why its OK to be nicknamed “pig” or “little” in Thailand and a myriad of other gems that are there to discover in the pages of “Thai Ways,” which is so aptly named in my opinion.
I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending, “Thai Ways,” and would even go as far as to say that it really is essential reading if you are serious about exploring the Thai culture. A good starting point anyway.
Other books by Denis Segaller.
Denis Segaller wrote several other books including some on the Thai language which are still in print. There are some more details on Denis Segaller.com, a site that has been created to celebrate his work.
Getting a copy of Thai Ways.
For anyone living in Thailand who would like a copy I obtained my copy of Thai Ways from Asia Books using their excellent on-line ordering system for the princely sum of 395 Baht, which because I ordered another book at the same time was postage and next day delivery free!
