Thailand Trivia Photo Quiz July 2011

What is farmed in this building in Thailand?

For my latest Thailand trivia photo quiz I would like you to answer some questions about the concrete building in this photograph. The photo is taken in the seaside village of Khlong Wan where this and two other similar buildings have recently been constructed.

I regularly cycle by this spot but it took me a little while to figure out what the builders were making. The final clue for me, which I got after the building was completed,  was the piped “music” emanating from the top of the structure at dusk.

Now if you have lived/travelled in other SE Asian countries  you may have seen this “farm” building before. They are not new to Thailand but it seems to me that they are now becoming more common.

I first witnessed people harvesting the “crop” in Borneo but that was not from a man made building.

1. What lives in the building?

2. What do they produce?

3. What happens to the “product.”

If you think you know the answer to my latest Thai trivia photo quiz please leave a comment.  If you don’t know watch out for a post in a couple of days about what is farmed here ;-)

You can now find the answers at Swiftlet Farming in Thailand.

Seen similar buildings before but no idea what they are for…

Glad you have seen them! You might be surprised in what lives there and its not the Thai version of a battery hens farm ;-)

A swiftlet ranch? Even if it isn’t, I never knew such a thing existed, until now!

Hi Snap, well done, thought it might be a hard one! How did you figure it out? I didn’t see any in CM on my visit.

Google ;) I’ve never seen one before either, I must have fluked it with my search words.

Snap apparently they have them is Australia too. Queensland?

Jing ruu? I’ve never seen or noticed them…big bucks in the bird nest business. My friend here pays 500 Baht per packet, so one can only guess how much they sell for in Australia.

As snap has pointed out its a Swift nest farm, they are common in Malaysia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird's_nest_soup

Pain is the ass actually as they are an eyesore and after a year or so if the facility is not cleaned properly there will be issues with white lice infestation.

Hi Lloyd-you clever bugger ;-) Like I said to Snap I thought this was a difficult one.  Incidentally there are two other “barns” just like in photo in KL under construction nearby, looks like you might have some swifts for company ;-)
